Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about training at Cherry Blossom Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Wellness.

General Questions

Do I need any experience to start?

No experience is required at all. Most people who train with us start as complete beginners. Classes are structured and taught at a pace that supports learning safely and confidently.

Do I need to be fit to begin?

No. You don’t need a base level of fitness to start. Training helps you build fitness gradually over time, and you’re encouraged to work at a pace that suits you.

Am I too old to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or breathwork?

Not at all. We have students of many ages. Training is adapted to the individual, with an emphasis on longevity, safety, and long-term development.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe?

Safety is a top priority. Classes are structured, supervised, and taught with control and respect. Beginners are guided carefully, and there is no pressure to spar before you’re ready.

What should I wear to my first BJJ class?

Comfortable sports clothing is fine for your first session. If you continue training, we’ll guide you on suitable kit such as a gi or no-gi attire.

Will I have to spar on my first day?

No. There is no pressure to spar. Your first session focuses on learning basic movements and understanding the environment.

What’s the difference between gi and no-gi BJJ?

Gi BJJ uses a traditional uniform and focuses on grips and control. No-gi BJJ is practiced in sportswear and emphasises movement and athletic grappling. Both are taught in a beginner-friendly way.

Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

What age can children start training?

Children can usually start from around age 4 or 5, depending on the class structure. Please contact us if you’re unsure which class is suitable for your child.

Is kids BJJ safe?

Yes. Kids classes are age-appropriate, structured, and focused on safety, respect, and confidence-building. All training is supervised and taught in a supportive environment.

What will my child gain from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Children often develop confidence, coordination, focus, discipline, and emotional regulation. The emphasis is on learning and personal growth rather than competition.

Women’s Self-Defence

Do I need any martial arts experience?

No experience is required. Sessions are designed to be accessible and supportive, focusing on practical skills and confidence rather than aggression.

Is this training intense or confrontational?

No. Training is calm, controlled, and respectful. The aim is to build awareness and confidence, not to create fear or stress.

Breathwork & Wellness

What is breathwork?

Breathwork refers to guided breathing practices that help support nervous system regulation, relaxation, and awareness. Sessions are practical, grounded, and beginner-friendly.

Is breathwork suitable if I’ve never done anything like this before?

Yes. No prior experience is needed. Sessions are taught gently, with clear guidance and no forced or extreme techniques.

Do I need to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to attend breathwork sessions?

No. Breathwork and wellness sessions are open to everyone, whether or not you train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
